Description of red cedar arch says unfinished. Does it need staining or painting?

This arch kit doesn't need to be stained or painted but you could certainly do that. If you did decide to stain your garden arch, we would recommend doing it the first year or two but it's not necessary. And if you did decide to put a finish on it, we'd do it before you assemble the arch. We only state that it's unfinished because there isn't an option for it to come with any kind of finish on it.
